Cataract Diagnosis & Treatment
Cataracts are a common condition, especially for people over 60, that causes blurry vision, increased glare, and poor night vision. They occur when the natural lens of the eye becomes cloudy, making it harder for light to pass through and for you to see clearly.
At Kristin L. Campbell OD, we can diagnose cataracts and assess the extent of their impact on your vision during your comprehensive eye exam. Our eye doctors will look for signs of clouding in the lens, check your visual acuity, and examine the back of your eye using advanced imaging tools. If you’ve been noticing vision changes—such as increased glare from headlights or dimming colors—cataracts could be the cause, and we can help you determine the best next steps.
Managing cataracts in the early stages
Cataracts don’t always require immediate surgery. In the early stages, we can often help manage cataracts with lifestyle changes and an updated prescription. Dr. Campbell and Dr. Jeffers may recommend:
- Adjusting your eyeglasses or contact lenses: Sometimes, an updated prescription can significantly improve your vision and help you manage symptoms like blurry vision or difficulty reading.
- Lifestyle changes: Wearing sunglasses to protect your eyes from UV light, increasing lighting in your home, and using magnifying lenses for reading may help reduce the impact of cataracts on your daily life.
- Diet and nutrition: A diet rich in antioxidants and nutrients like vitamins C and E can support overall eye health and may help slow the progression of cataracts.
When cataract surgery is necessary
If your cataracts progress to the point where they interfere with your daily activities and can no longer be managed with glasses or lifestyle changes, cataract surgery may be the best option. Cataract surgery is a highly effective procedure where the cloudy lens is replaced with a clear artificial lens. While we don’t perform the surgery ourselves, we can refer you to a trusted surgeon in the area when the time is right.
